Yom KiPPUR


Yom Kippur, Wednesday 15th ending Thursday 16 September, 2021. (or October in Gregorian calendar).

Yom Kippur means, Day of Atonement. It’s a day to reflect on the past year and ask God’s forgiveness for sins committed.

In the Jewish calendar, it’s the 10th day of the  month of Tishrei. A most sacred date of fasting, among Jews. Fasting is a means of reflection on ones sins and it dates back to Biblical times.

“The purpose of fasting is to bring one to repent.  As such, true repentance brings a change in our behaviours.

During the exodus from Egypt, God by Moses gave Israel two stone tablets containing the Ten Commandments (Exodus 31:18). However, when Moses descended from Mount Sinai, Israelites were worshipping a golden calf and he shattered the holy tablets in anger (Exodus 32:19).

The Israelites atoned for their idolatry and God forgave them on the 10th day of Tishrei, which then became known as Yom Kippur.

The High priest, Aaron, entered into the Holy of Holies bearing the blood of sin offering and sprinkled it on the mercy seat. God met man there (Exodus 29:42).

Today, Jesus the lamb of God, has entered into the Holy of holies with his own blood to atone (Hebrews 9:12).

We can, Rejoice for God through Jesus atoned ( Romans 5:11).

in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins (Colossians 1:14).
